What size wing do you need for your weight?

The wing is the inflatable sail you hold in your hands. It is measured in square meters (m²). Don't confuse it with the foil's front wing, mounted under the board and measured in cm²: you'll find those in all foils.

Your main wing, the one you'll ride most often, depends on your weight:

• under 75 kg (165 lb): 4 m²
• 75 to 90 kg (165 to 198 lb): 5 m²
• over 90 kg (198 lb): 6 m²

These sizes are for light wind, 15 to 20 knots. To pick your foil and board too, start with our wing foil gear guide.

What size wing do you need for the wind?

The heavier you are, the bigger your wing. The stronger the wind, the smaller your wing, even if you're a heavier rider. Our guidelines, in m²:

These are guidelines. AFS wings range from 2.8 to 6 m².

Between two sizes in light wind, go bigger. Being a little overpowered is better than being underpowered: you can always get back to shore. When the wind picks up, switch to a smaller wing. Read more in our article which wing for which wind speed.

What's the best wing for beginners?

Get the D-Lite Black in the size that matches your weight, with handles. It's a stable wing that's easy to handle. Soft handles make learning simpler.

Go out in 15 to 20 knots. Below that, getting up on foil is hard. Above 20 knots, you need a smaller wing (see the table). Over 25 knots, the wind is too strong to learn. More tips in which wing to choose as a beginner.

D-Lite Black, Stream One or Stream?

• Your first wing: D-Lite Black, Dacron construction, 3 to 6 m².
• You're progressing or ride regularly: Stream One, an all-round freeride wing, 2.8 to 6 m². It shares the Stream's shape.
• You're intermediate to expert: Stream, for freeride, freefly (gliding and pumping) and waves. 3 to 6 m², in half-meter steps.

The Stream is built with UPE and Dacron. UPE allows thinner tubes, so less weight. In 4 m², it weighs 1.86 kg (4.1 lb), compared with 1.97 kg (4.3 lb) for the Stream One and 2.1 kg (4.6 lb) for the D-Lite Black.

What's in the box, and what else you need

Every AFS wing comes with a carry bag, a repair kit and a wing leash. The leash keeps the wing tethered to you if you fall. If you damage or lose it, the wing leash is also sold separately.

What size wing foil wing should I get?

Go by your weight first: 4 m² under 75 kg (165 lb), 5 m² from 75 to 90 kg (165 to 198 lb), 6 m² over 90 kg (198 lb), in 15 to 20 knots. In stronger wind, go smaller (see the table above).

How many wings do I need?

Not many to start: one main wing is enough. Later, two or three sizes cover most conditions. The Stream One comes in 2.8 and 3.5 m² for that: they complement a 4 or 5 m².

How much wind do I need to wing foil?

Our size guidelines start at 15 knots. Below that, getting up on foil is hard, especially when learning.

Handles or boom?

To learn, go with soft handles. A boom is an option on all three models, selected on the product page.

Is a foil wing the same as a wing foil wing?

No. The wing foil wing is the sail you hold. The foil's front wing sits under the board, at the end of the mast. Both are sold by AFS: front wings are in all foils.
