A pump foil board is short, stiff and light, so your legs can turn each pump into speed. For dock starts, we recommend the SK8 if you are a beginner, and the Dock-star once you reach intermediate level. You will find both boards, and the foils that go with them, on our dock start and pump foil page.
This guide covers pump foiling from a dock. To pump on a wave or behind a wing, read getting started with foil surfing or how to pump in wing foil.
Pump foil board size: our two dock start boards
We pick a dock start board by your level, not by your weight. Our range has two boards, side by side:
| SK8 | Dock-star | |
|---|---|---|
| Level | Beginner | Intermediate and expert |
| Volume | 16 L | 7 L |
| Length | 95 cm (37.4 in) | 83 cm (32.7 in) |
| Width | 44 cm (17.3 in) | 38.5 cm (15.2 in) |
| Weight | 2.3 kg (5.1 lb) | about 1.7 kg (3.8 lb) |
| Construction | Fiberglass and PVC sandwich, carbon reinforcements at key points | Carbon prepreg, Corecell foam core |
| Strap inserts | No | No |

Which pump foil board for a beginner?
If you are learning to dock start, we recommend the SK8. It is the longer and wider of our two boards, so you have more room for your feet. Its volume sits on the rails to keep it stable. Beveled rails stop the board from catching when it touches the water, so you can keep flying.
It is still a pumping board. Its U-shape adds stiffness and sends more of your effort into the foil. It also thins the center of the board, which brings the foil closer to your back foot. Our dock start riders had a free hand to design it. It works for pumping at every level, and it also suits experienced kitefoil riders who want a reactive board.
The adjustable US double rail mount lets you slide the foil forward or back to fine-tune the feel.
When to move to the Dock-star
Once you reach intermediate level, we recommend the Dock-star. It is shorter (83 cm), narrower (38.5 cm) and lighter than the SK8, so there is less board to move with each pump.
- The deck tilts slightly forward, for a more natural, propulsive motion.
- A large internal stringer keeps it stiff, for more energy return.
- No strap inserts, so your feet stay free.
It uses the same high-end materials and construction as our performance gear, such as the Blackbird board.
Volume, length, width: what changes on a pump board?
How many liters should a pump foil board be?
Our dock start boards are 16 L (SK8) and 7 L (Dock-star). We do not choose a dock start board by volume: we choose it by level.
Length
The SK8 gives you more deck to land on. The Dock-star is 12 cm (about 5 in) shorter and lighter, for less board to move under your feet.
Width
The SK8 is 5.5 cm (about 2 in) wider. With the volume on its rails, it helps keep you stable while you learn.
Stiffness and weight
A stiffer board sends more of your effort into the foil. That is the job of the U-shape on the SK8 and of the internal stringer on the Dock-star.
Board or foil: what matters most for pumping?
The board matters, but the front wing sets how easily you pump. For dock starts, we recommend an 80 cm (31.5 in) mast.
The setup we recommend is the Enduro GLT Foil Full Set: Enduro GLT 1600 front wing, 80 cm UHM carbon mast, short fuselage and Ultra Glide 43 stabilizer. We designed this front wing for dock starts, to help you progress from your very first one.
Your gear also sets your pumping rhythm. With a wide front wing and a long fuselage, the movement relies more on inertia, at a lower frequency. With a smaller front wing and a short fuselage, you pump at a faster, steadier pace. To work on your technique, read our pumping tips and tricks.
Common mistakes
- Starting on the Dock-star as a beginner. Start on the SK8.
- Spending on the board and keeping a small front wing.
- Using a long mast. For dock starts, we recommend 80 cm.
FAQ
Do heavier riders need a bigger pump foil board?
We recommend the board by level, not by weight. Your weight changes the foil: the heavier you are, the more front wing area you need. From 80 kg (176 lb), we recommend at least a UHM mast. To compare mast constructions, read how to choose your AFS carbon mast.
Will my foil fit these boards?
The SK8 has an adjustable US double rail mount. The Dock Star has a US double rail mount too.
Carbon or fiberglass pump board?
The SK8 uses a fiberglass and PVC sandwich with carbon reinforcements, and an epoxy resin with more than 33% of its molecules from plant sources. The Dock-star uses carbon prepreg over a Corecell foam core. It is lighter, and it is the board we recommend from intermediate level.
Do I need foot straps on a pump board?
No. Neither of our dock start boards has strap inserts, so your feet stay free to move.
Is there a warranty on AFS pump boards?
Yes. All our products come with a 2-year warranty.
