What are the conditions for wingfoiling in Corsica?
Corsica offers ideal conditions if you enjoy warm seas, which regularly reach 25 degrees in summer. Ideal if you want to take lessons or perfect your learning: no more fear of falling!
As for the wind, the multitude of exposed bays—or sheltered ones, depending on the terrain—offer a wide variety of conditions. In general, the southwest coast enjoys plenty of thermal winds in the summer with the Libeccio. To the north, Mistral (more summery) and Tramontane (wintry) are ideal if you’re good enough for a wind range above 25 knots. The autumnal “Greek” wind blows in the east until the end of winter.
Last but not least, the swell is back in Corsica. The first major downwind races take place in the Mediterranean, and for good reason! To the east, you will find calm waters. The swell generally comes from the south-south-east. The same in the West, with a west and southwest orientation. If you’re looking for a more energetic ride, you’ll have to head north to Cap Corse, where you’ll discover both sumptuous landscapes and a wide variety of sailing areas ideal for downwind sailing, the latest in board sports.

Wing foil in and around Bonifacio
If there is one destination to favor for water sports in Corsica, or even in France, it is Southern Corsica with Bonifacio and its surroundings. While the town is indeed an excellent starting point, you will need to venture to the incredible spot of Piantarella if you want to enjoy it to the fullest. Benefiting from prevailing westerly winds and good orientation, it is the first destination to consider when you arrive. Particularly beautiful, the lagoon is a victim of its own success in high season and lacks a little depth for launching, but remains a must-see. Try kitesurfing here when you get the chance, but also try the waves when the southwesterly wind picks up: as you leave the flat lagoon, some great jumps await you.
Out of season, as it too is very busy in summer (and kite surfing is prohibited at that time), the sandbanks of Figari Bay are a must, especially if you are a beginner and looking for a safe place for your first flights. The good news is that thermals are also present in summer, unlike many other beaches in Southern Corsica.

For experienced riders, Balistra works well in westerly winds for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wing surfing because it is very flat, and becomes a wave spot in easterly winds. It is not very popular for good reasons: difficult to access and relatively dangerous, it has to be earned. Even more confidential, La Punta is a surf, windsurf and wingsurf spot with an unforgiving rocky slab, but it also offers crazy south-westerly waves for the most seasoned riders. It is sometimes even better to forget about the wing and focus on surf foiling or funboarding in the latter sport.
Note that you can reach Bonifacio by boat. The good news is that the beaches are accessible by sailboat, and the numerous anchorages allow you to explore the area without having to drive.
Wing foil on the west coast of Corsica
Further up, near Ajaccio, you will find Ricanto beach, which is ideal for beginners to wing surfing. It is easy to access and launch from. To learn (or improve) your wave surfing skills, Capo di Feno is not far away and works best in westerly winds. Note that Ajaccio Bay has plenty of thermals throughout the season.
The most experienced practitioners and those looking for a body of water suitable for downwind or surfing will head north to Balagne, towards the Gulf of Calvi, or even Cap Corse, which benefits from favorable winds and a more powerful swell.
Wingsurfing on Corsica’s east coast
On your way back from Bonifacio, stop off further north at Porto Vecchio and the Santa Giulia spot. Magnificent, although very busy in summer, it works very well in a north-easterly wind.
Halfway between Porto Vecchio and Bastia, Ghisonaccia is the last haven of peace for novice wingfoilers, before completing the journey with a return to Cap Corse, at Macinaggio. This last spot is revealed only by strong southeasterly winds, but is clearly worth a visit. Bring small wings for the Cape, as the wind can come up fast and strong.
What wing equipment should you bring to Corsica?

If you are new to wing foiling, or looking to take lessons with your own equipment, head to the Bonifacio region and eastern Corsica. Given the conditions, plan for fairly large wing surfaces, such as a Diamond 6m or a lifting foil (Performer 1650 or 1900) and a board with a little buoyancy, such as the Fire and Fly, or even the Blackbird for super light conditions.
For experienced wingfoilers and downwind enthusiasts, your Blackbird board is a must-have for the Cape, with a foil like the wave-riding Silk or the versatile Pure. On the other hand, Piantarella ‘s hybrid spots are ideal for a Fly 2023, with a smaller volume. Race enthusiasts will head to the Gulf of Ajaccio with the Wild (more suited to large areas), the Pro 4.5, and a Pure.
Finally, if you want to try your hand at foil surfing, grab your Chipri Pro or Fly Surf, a Silk, and head to the east coast: from Sainte Lucie de Porto Vecchio to Grisgione via Tarcu and Travo, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
