Here it is, are you convinced to start practicing wingfoil? Whether you are completely new to the sport or already practice other water sports (wind foil, kite surfing, windsurfing, wake, etc.), find some advice in this article to guide you in choosing your first board from the AFS brand. If you still have questions, a team of practitioners and enthusiasts is available on chat (blue icon at the bottom of the screen). A complete guide about wingsurfing is also available.

Types of Foil Boarding

Foil boarding encompasses a diverse range of activities, each offering unique thrills and challenges. One of the most popular variations is wing surfing, where practitioners use a handheld wing to harness the wind’s power and glide above the water’s surface. This dynamic sport combines elements of windsurfing and kiteboarding, providing an exhilarating experience for both beginners and seasoned enthusiasts. Another variant is surf foiling, which involves riding ocean waves with a hydrofoil-equipped surfboard. This discipline requires precise balance and timing, as riders effortlessly carve through waves with minimal resistance. Additionally, there’s e-foiling, where electric-powered hydrofoils propel riders silently across the water, offering a serene and eco-friendly alternative to traditional watercraft. Whether it’s the adrenaline-fueled excitement of wing foiling, the graceful maneuvers of surf foiling, or the futuristic appeal of e-foiling, there’s a foil boarding style suited for every adventurer seeking to conquer the waves in a whole new way.

Which board to choose ?

Length

The longer a board is, the more it will glide on the water. For beginners, we recommend a rather long board to enjoy flight as quickly as possible. Conversely, a shorter board allows for more radical turns, a more technical and physical ride, and an instant response. Very smal length have a very low glide speed but are ultra-responsive, offer high performance, and are easily transportable if they have a reasonable volume and width. They are suited for more experienced riders.

Outline

This refers to the outer curve of the wing board. Design with a rectangular outline and wide ends are easier to balance, take off early, and are more compact, which requires less technique – in our range, these are the Fly Rouge and Fire models. Shape with an ovoid outline, featuring thinner ends, require an advanced level for balance and takeoff, but offer optimal responsiveness and control.

Width

The width of the foilboard affects balance, lift, and maneuverability. The wider a board is, the more stable it will be. In our range, this particularly includes the Fly boards.

Volume

For beginners in winging, it’s important to favor a positive volume relative to one’s weight. Ideally, we recommend choosing a volume that is +10 liters compared to your weight. An intermediate level practitioner could opt for a volume roughly equivalent to their weight. Finally, an experienced rider could go for volumes below their weight. These boards will require more physical effort to get started.

Construction technology

Today, there are two main types of construction: inflatable (air) and rigid.

Rigid boards often use a sandwich construction. Similar to a sandwich, there’s a core, often a foam block, with outer skins that can be PVC, fiberglass, or carbon fiber. Although more cumbersome, we tend to recommend rigid boards for all levels as they directly provide more sensation, have better glide, and thus allow for faster progression (compared to an inflatable board). It’s also more durable. Don’t hesitate to also ask for the thickness of the pad if it’s not indicated, because when you’re starting out, for example, you spend some time on your knees. A thicker pad provides more comfort in this position.

Which board in AFS range?

We have several types of boards depending on your level/practice. The Fly, available in 2 sizes (M – 95L and L – 103L), is the easiest and most accessible board in our range. It is perfect for getting started in wing foil safely. The Fly, its little sister, available in 4 sizes, is the board that allows you to practice wing foil/sup foil. It is forgiving and easy with smaller volumes for practitioners who can already make their first tacks. The Fire is a 100% wing foil board. It is the most versatile wing foil board in our range (freeride, freestyle, waves, etc.). The Whitebird is a multi-practice board (wing foil, sup foil, downwind, etc.). Its main advantage is its length, which allows for takeoff in very light winds. The Blackbird, its big sister, is the carbon model, made in France for sizes 6’2 and 6’4. The Blackbird also comes in sizes 7’6 and 8’0 but is aimed mainly at practitioners of downwind, sup foil downwind, and prone foil. The Pro is the board developed by and for our GWA riders. It is a versatile wing foil board, in full carbon and French construction. The Fire is directly inspired by this model. Finally, the Chipri Pro is a board developed by Chipri Courde, recognized in the world of surf foil. This board can also be used very well in wing hydrofoil.

Is it necessary to use a board leash in wingsurfing?

A board equipped with a leash is not indispensable but can be of great help! Personally, we recommend using one for two main reasons: Personal safety: The board leash is essential for safety. It keeps you connected to the board in case of a fall, preventing it from drifting away or injuring others. Damage prevention: The leash also protects the board and foil from damage by preventing them from grounding or getting lost. It can be attached directly to the ankle of your foot or to a waist harness. Find all our advice and products on wing foil.

F.A.Q.

Foil And Co is the parent company of AFS. Its main mission is to relocate the production of our board sports equipment to France. Today, the company has 42 employees and is based in Brittany. We develop, produce and market under AFS. We also have 2 other brands, AHD and SEALION.

AFS was born within the AHD entity in 2009, with the launch of the first windsurf foil combo (board plus production foil). The historic model is the AFS-1, a foil dedicated to light wind freeride practice, with small sail surfaces (5.5m² in 10 knots of wind). Its field of use was later extended to SUP foils, with the Sealion range of boards, making it the first Stand Up Paddle-compatible foil on the market (2011). 2017 saw the launch of the AFS-2, a new-generation foil developed and manufactured in France. With it, AFS takes off and becomes a fully-fledged entity dedicated to foils. AFS’s vocation is to offer a more high-performance foiling experience, while retaining top-notch accessibility and stability to provide all riders with a safe ride thanks to full carbon construction. Thanks to our know-how and high standards, we are the leading foil manufacturer in France. At AFS, our customers feel they are listened to and supported in their choice.

AFS Advanced is a branch of AFS working on the development of an innovative experience. It’s a concentration of AFS know-how taken to the extreme. Being one step ahead and opening up new horizons in the world of foiling: that’s the role of AFS Advanced. It’s our way of concentrating our know-how and expertise to produce the most advanced designs. It’s the essence and the future of AFS. The essence of our know-how, pushed to the limits of its performance.

Our head office is located in Brittany, more precisely in Pencran, Finistère. We are located Espace Joseph Rolland – 29800 PENCRAN

All AFS foils are manufactured at our company in Pencran, France. All AFS Advanced boards are also made here. Some of our boards are made in Tunisia at Terminatech, as are our covers. Finally, although we haven’t yet managed to make the leap, our wings are now made in China, although all R&D is carried out in-house.
