Surf Foil Front Wing Size: What Size for Your Weight?

OCTOBER 30, 2026

Table of contents

In surf foiling, your front wing size depends on your weight first. We recommend about 870 cm² (135 in²) at 70 kg (154 lb) and 970 cm² (150 in²) at 80 kg (176 lb). That is roughly 100 cm² more for every 10 kg (22 lb). Your waves then fine-tune that starting point. To get your size in a few clicks, use the simulator on our surf foil page, or browse all our surf foils.

What front wing size for your weight in surf foiling?

The Silk V2 comes in six sizes, from 650 to 1150 cm² (101 to 178 in²). Here is the size we recommend for your weight if you already fly. If you are a beginner, see below how your level changes your size.

Your weight Recommended Silk V2
50 kg (110 lb) 650
55 to 60 kg (121 to 132 lb) 750
65 to 70 kg (143 to 154 lb) 850
75 to 80 kg (165 to 176 lb) 950
85 to 90 kg (187 to 198 lb) 1050
95 kg (209 lb) and up 1150

Above 100 kg (220 lb), we recommend the 1150: it is the largest Silk V2. If your weight falls between two rows, the simulator gives you your size.

Coming from the Silk V1? The V2 750 is the equivalent of the old 850.

Small or big waves: when should you change size?

A bigger wing takes off earlier and flies slower. A smaller wing goes faster, but it needs a wave with push. If your waves are small, go a little bigger than your weight-based size. If they are hollow and powerful, go down one size.

What each Silk V2 size does best:

  • 1150: micro conditions, early takeoff, maximum lift.
  • 1050: small conditions, with sharper rail-to-rail than the 1150.
  • 950: small to medium conditions. The balance between rail-to-rail, speed and low-speed forgiveness.
  • 850: for pushing your carves.
  • 750: more committed wave riding.
  • 650: big conditions and tow-in.

This list describes what each wing does best. Your starting size is still the one in the chart.

How to read cm², wingspan and aspect ratio

Area, in cm², gives lift. It sets how slowly you can take off. Wingspan is the width of the wing from tip to tip. Aspect ratio links the two: the higher it is, the longer and thinner the wing for the same area.

In general, a higher aspect wing has less drag and glides farther. A wing with a more moderate aspect ratio turns more easily. To go further, read our article on aspect ratio.

Wing Aspect ratio Sizes (cm²) Wingspan
Silk V2 9 650 to 1150 (101 to 178 in²) 765 to 1,017 mm (30.1 to 40.0 in)
Enduro 11 600 to 1300 (93 to 202 in²) 813 to 1,190 mm (32.0 to 46.9 in)

Example: the Silk V2 1050 has a 972 mm (38.3 in) wingspan. The Enduro 900 has a smaller area, but it measures 994 mm (39.1 in).

A high aspect wing for small conditions?

When the waves are small, every pump counts. A higher aspect wing holds its speed better between waves. In surf foiling, that is the job of the Enduro.

With its aspect ratio of 11, the Enduro is efficient for pumping. We recommend it in 800 or 900 for surf foiling in small conditions.

We like to compare the Enduro 900 to the Silk 1050. The Silk drives radical turns in powerful waves, like a shortboard. The Enduro 900 carves more smoothly, like a longboard.

If you mostly want to link mushy waves, the Enduro makes sense. If you prefer carving on waves with push, the Silk V2 is the better fit. To work on your technique, read our article on pump foiling.

Does your level change your front wing size in surf foiling?

Yes. The chart gives the size for a rider who already flies. If you are a beginner, we recommend a bigger wing: it takes off earlier, flies slower and is more forgiving. Use our foil finder to get your size for your weight and level. If you are experienced and your waves have push, you can go down one size. For your first sessions, read getting started with foil surfing: gear, takeoff and first flights.

What about the stabilizer and the mast?

The stab changes your wing’s character: more stability or more carving. To choose yours, read U-Carve or U-Surf stabilizer: which one for your Silk V2? For the mast, we recommend 80 cm (31.5 in) for surf foiling. Our AFS mast comparison covers our ranges.

The Silk V2 foil full set combines the front wing, an 80 cm (31.5 in) UHM carbon mast, the fuselage and a U-Surf stabilizer.

FAQ: surf foil front wing size

What size front wing for a 150 lb rider?

At 150 lb (68 kg), aim for about 850 cm² (132 in²). We recommend a Silk V2 850.

What size front wing for a 180 lb rider?

At 180 lb (82 kg), aim for about 990 cm² (153 in²). We recommend a Silk V2 950.

What size front wing for a 200 lb rider?

At 200 lb (91 kg), aim for about 1,080 cm² (167 in²). We recommend a Silk V2 1050. If your waves are very small, the 1150 takes off earlier.

Is a bigger front wing better for beginners?

Yes. A bigger wing takes off earlier and is more forgiving. As a beginner, go bigger than the size in the chart, and a little bigger still if your waves are small.

When should you move to a smaller front wing?

When your waves get bigger or more hollow. Go down one size at a time. In the Silk V2 range, the 750 is for more committed wave riding and the 650 for big conditions.

Can you buy a used front wing?

Yes. Check the AFS marketplace for pre-owned gear.

Is my front wing covered by a warranty?

Yes, by a 2-year limited warranty. Our foils are made in France, at our factory in Brittany. For returns, see our terms of sale.
