Which foil board for which discipline?

Each discipline has its own volume range. Pick the board for your discipline first, then its size for your weight and level: our advice is just below.

Which wing foil board for your level?

The newer you are, the more liters you need. Volume keeps you afloat when you stop and helps you get going again after a fall. As you progress, you drop volume to gain maneuverability.

You're a beginner

Our pick: the Fly One. It's a compact, solid wing foil board built for every stage of progression. If you're a complete beginner, here is the size we recommend for your weight:

• under 65 kg (143 lb): 5'8", 90 L;
• 65 to 75 kg (143 to 165 lb): 6'0", 105 L;
• 75 to 85 kg (165 to 187 lb): 6'2", 115 L;
• over 85 kg (187 lb): 6'4", 125 L.

You're progressing

Once you've got your first flights, move up to the Blackbird Mid-Length, from 65 to 100 L. It gives you quick takeoffs and efficient pumping. It also works for parawing, surf foil and SUP foil. Our article What's a mid-length board? recommends a mid-length from the advanced beginner stage, not for your very first sessions.

You're experienced

For freestyle, waves and racing, go for the Fire Pro, in carbon. We recommend: under 70 kg (154 lb), 4'6" (56 L); 70 to 90 kg (154 to 198 lb), 5'0" (70 L); over 90 kg (198 lb), 5'8" (100 L). If you're between two levels, take the bigger volume.

What volume for surf foil and downwind?

In surf foil, the wave gets you going. The board stays small, from 30 to 50 L.

• Chipri Legacy, 2.6 to 2.9 kg (5.7 to 6.4 lb): 4'1" (30 L) for expert riders; 4'5" (35 L) for most intermediate to advanced riders; 4'9" (40 L) for bigger riders or softer waves.
• Single F: 5'4" (40 L) for surf foil, or wing foil if you're light; 5'8" (50 L) for surf foil and wing foil, light to mid-weight riders.

For a 75 kg (165 lb) intermediate rider, we recommend the Chipri Legacy 4'5" (35 L). Try the simulator with your own weight on the surf foil page.

For downwind, the Blackbird Skinny comes in four sizes: 8'2" x 17" (105 L), 8'2" x 18½" (115 L), 8'6" x 16½" (110 L) and 8'6" x 18" (120 L). The wider ones (18" and 18½") take off more easily and suit riders who are progressing. The narrower ones (16½" and 17") are for experienced riders.

Will my board fit my foil?

Foils mount on US tracks, which all our boards have. Not sure? Ask an AFS expert.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a foil board and a hydrofoil board?

None: it's the same board. A hydrofoil is the foil itself, the mast and wings that lift the board out of the water. The board carries you and holds the foil.

What size foil board do I need?

It depends on your weight, your level and your discipline. For wing foiling, the newer you are, the more volume you need: for a complete beginner on the Fly One, from 90 L under 65 kg (143 lb) up to 125 L over 85 kg (187 lb). In surf foil, boards stay between 30 and 50 L.

Can I use a wing foil board for other disciplines?

Yes, some of them. The Blackbird Mid-Length works for wing foil, parawing, surf foil and SUP foil. The other way around, some surf foil boards work for wing foil for lighter riders: the Chipri Legacy 4'9" and the Single F.
